I need protein! I feel I have eaten so much bread and pasta and whatever lately, that I need some source of protein for a change. So, beans and soy and things like that.. So I decided to make one of my favorites, Chili Sin Carne.. although poor mans version, but still very tasty. I’ll post recipe of the original also at some point. (EDIT: new recipe can be found here). But here we go:

Chili Sin Carne
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 carrot
  • half of red capsicum (paprika)
  • 1 fresh chili, seeds removed
  • olive oil
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp of jeera
  • salt & pepper
  • cinnamon
  • 200g prepared textured vegetable protein (soy meat) (is this really the right word for it??)
  • 1 can of crushed tomatoes (whole ones would be better)
  • 1 can of kidney beans
  • 0,5dl water
  1. Chop all the vegetables as small as you can.
  2. Heat some olive oil in frying pan and fry vegetables, chilipowder and jeera until vegetables gets soft.
  3. Add crushed tomatoes, soy meat, cinnamon and water.
  4. Reduce heat and cover with lid.
  5. Cook for an hour.
  6. Add kidney beans and cook for 30 minutes more.
  7. Serve with rice, joghurt, sour cream dip (mildly spiced), white bread and/or guacamole.
  8. TIP: joghurt/dip and white bread are a must as they reduce the heat, if you make your chili too hot, as I usually do
  9. I didn't have any chili powder of fresh chilies, so I used chili sauces. You can use any chili product as long as it is hot!



You have to be careful with this, one drop is OK, two is too much
Excellent Finnish smoked chili and garlic paste. A must have in your kitchen
